The front of a cap holds a logo about 1.75 to 2.25 inches tall and up to about 4.5 inches wide. That is a small canvas on a curved surface, so a logo built for a shirt often needs a simpler version for a hat. Ready to put yours on one? embroidered hats with no minimum.
Front panel sizes by hat style
- Unstructured dad hat: about 1.75 inches tall, up to roughly 4.5 inches wide. The soft front curves more, so wide logos bend at the edges.
- Structured snapback or trucker: about 2 to 2.25 inches tall, up to about 4.5 inches wide. The stiff front panel keeps the logo flat.
- Beanie cuff: about 2 inches tall and 4 to 5 inches wide on the folded cuff.
Those are the outer limits. Most logos look best a little inside them: around 1.5 inches tall on a dad hat and 2 inches on a structured cap. The builder shows the exact embroidery zone for each hat, so you can see the real boundary before ordering.
Side and back placements
The side of a cap fits a small mark, about 1.5 to 2 inches wide and about an inch tall. The back, above the strap opening, fits a short word or a website at roughly 2.5 inches wide and under an inch tall. These spots work well for a second detail like a year, a city or a small icon, and they keep the front clean.
What shrinks badly on a hat
At 1.75 inches tall, a logo with a tagline usually loses the tagline. Letters under about a quarter inch tall close up. Thin outlines disappear. Gradients turn into bands. A long horizontal wordmark at 4.5 inches wide can only be about an inch tall, which looks thin on a hat.
The fix most brands use is a hat version of the logo: just the icon, just the initials, or the name stacked on two lines. Big companies do the same thing, and nobody notices because the hat version still looks like the brand.
Thread colors on a cap
Keep it to a few colors, and make sure they contrast with the hat. Navy thread on a black cap disappears in daylight. White, cream, gold and light grey hold up on dark hats. On light hats, black and navy read best. Up to about six thread colors is possible, but two or three usually looks sharper on a mark this small.
Flat or raised?
Raised 3D puff embroidery is a popular hat look, and it needs bold, thick shapes. If your logo has fine detail, stay with flat embroidery. Our comparison of 3D puff and flat embroidery explains when puff is worth it.
Test one first
Order a single hat, look at it from a few feet away, and check the smallest detail. If it holds, order the rest. If it does not, simplify the logo and try again. One hat is a normal order, so the test costs the price of a hat. The full lineup of styles is in our custom embroidered hats guide, and the left chest logo size guide covers shirts.
Is there really no minimum?
None. One piece is a real order at normal pricing, with no small-order surcharge and no setup or digitizing fee. Every piece is made to order and ships in about 5 to 9 business days, and that window is the same for one piece or a few hundred. On eligible garments, volume pricing applies automatically once you order enough of the same item, usually starting around 25 pieces.

Frequently asked questions
How big can a logo be on the front of a hat?
About 1.75 to 2.25 inches tall and up to roughly 4.5 inches wide, depending on the hat. Structured caps hold slightly taller logos than soft dad hats.
What size should a logo be on a dad hat?
Around 1.5 inches tall usually looks best, with a hard limit near 1.75 inches because of the soft curved front.
Can I put embroidery on the side or back of a cap?
Yes. The side fits a mark about 1.5 to 2 inches wide, and the back above the strap fits a short word around 2.5 inches wide.
Why does my logo look bad on a hat?
Small text, thin lines, taglines and gradients all fail at hat size. A simplified hat version of the logo usually fixes it.
How many thread colors can a hat have?
Up to about six, but two or three high-contrast colors look sharper on a small cap logo.
Can I order just one hat?
Yes. There is no minimum, so one hat is a normal order at normal pricing.
