Left Chest Logo Size: The Measurements That Look Right

A left chest logo on an adult shirt looks right at about 3 to 4 inches wide, sitting roughly 7 to 9 inches below the top of the shoulder seam. Go much bigger and it starts to read like a costume. Go smaller than about 2.5 inches and people squint at it. Want to try a size on a real garment? custom embroidered polos with no minimum.

The standard sizes, garment by garment

  • T-shirts: 3 to 4 inches wide. A wide wordmark can stretch to 4.5 inches if it is short and simple.
  • Polos: 3 to 3.75 inches wide. The placket and the shorter body make a big logo look crowded.
  • Hoodies and crewnecks: 3.5 to 4.5 inches wide. Heavier fabric and a bigger torso can carry a bit more.
  • Quarter-zips: 3 to 3.5 inches wide, shifted about an inch away from the zipper so the stitching never touches the tape.
  • Youth sizes: 2.5 to 3 inches wide.
  • Women's fitted cuts: 2.75 to 3.25 inches wide, placed slightly higher so it sits above the bust line.

Height matters as much as width. A square or round mark (a crest, a monogram, a badge) usually looks best at 2.5 to 3 inches tall. A long horizontal wordmark often ends up just 1 to 1.25 inches tall at 4 inches wide, which is fine as long as the smallest letters stay above a quarter inch.

Where exactly does it go?

Measure from the high point of the shoulder, where the shoulder seam meets the collar. The top of the logo usually lands 7 to 9 inches down on adult shirts. Horizontally, the center of the logo sits about 4 inches from the center of the shirt, which on a polo means roughly halfway between the placket and the armpit seam.

The common mistake is placing it too low. A logo that sits at nipple height looks like it is sliding down the shirt once someone is wearing it. A quick check: it should land about a hand's width below the collar on the person who wears the shirt.

Why small logos fail first

Embroidery has physical limits. Text under about a quarter inch tall closes up, and lines thinner than about a millimeter fill in. A logo that has a tagline under the main mark often loses the tagline at left chest size. The cleanest fix is to drop the tagline on the chest and put it on the sleeve or the back, where it can be bigger. Our guide to preparing artwork for embroidery covers the rest of the limits.

When to go bigger

Left chest is a quiet placement. If the shirt is meant to be seen from across a parking lot, use a full back print at 10 to 12 inches wide and keep the chest small. For hoodies, a center chest piece at 8 to 10 inches works when the logo is the whole point. See large center chest embroidery for that style.

Quick reference

  • Full front print: 10 to 12 inches wide
  • Full back print: 12 to 14 inches wide
  • Sleeve: 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide, or a vertical strip up to about 1.5 inches wide
  • Back of the neck: 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide
  • Cap front: about 2 inches tall, see the hat embroidery size guide

Check it before the whole order

A size that looks right on a screen can look different on a real chest. Order one shirt, put it on the person with the broadest build on the team and the person with the slightest build, and look at it from six feet away. The builder previews placement on the actual garment photo, so you can adjust before ordering. The embroidery design maker helps simplify a logo that has too much detail for chest size.

Is there really no minimum?

None. One piece is a real order at normal pricing, with no small-order surcharge and no setup or digitizing fee. Every piece is made to order and ships in about 5 to 9 business days, and that window is the same for one piece or a few hundred. On eligible garments, volume pricing applies automatically once you order enough of the same item, usually starting around 25 pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard left chest logo size?

About 3 to 4 inches wide for adult tees and hoodies, 3 to 3.75 inches on polos, and 2.5 to 3 inches for youth sizes.

How far down from the collar should a left chest logo go?

The top of the logo usually sits 7 to 9 inches below the high point of the shoulder on adult shirts, roughly a hand's width below the collar.

Can a left chest logo be too small?

Yes. Below about 2.5 inches wide it gets hard to read, and any text under a quarter inch tall will close up in embroidery.

Should the logo be bigger on a hoodie?

Slightly. Hoodies and crewnecks can carry 3.5 to 4.5 inches wide because the fabric is heavier and the torso is bigger.

Where does the logo go on a quarter-zip?

Left chest at 3 to 3.5 inches wide, moved about an inch away from the zipper so the stitching never touches it.

Is there a minimum order to test a size?

No. One piece is a normal order, so you can test the size on a real shirt before ordering for everyone.
