Teacher Appreciation Week Shirts the Whole Staff Will Wear

Teacher appreciation week shirts are one of the easiest staff gifts to get right and one of the easiest to get wrong. Done well, the whole building wears them on the same day, the photo goes in the newsletter, and staff keep wearing them on spirit Fridays for years. Done badly, they are a generic slogan in the wrong sizes that ends up in a drawer. Here is how PTAs, PTOs and school leaders plan teacher appreciation week shirts the staff will actually wear. See the options here: school staff apparel, no minimum.

Who should get teacher appreciation week shirts

Everyone in the building. Teachers, aides and paraprofessionals, office staff, custodians, cafeteria staff, bus drivers, the nurse, the counselor and the principal. Teacher Appreciation Week is often celebrated as staff appreciation for exactly this reason. The person left off the list remembers it longer than anyone remembers the shirt.

Ask the front office for the full staff list early. It is the one list that includes everyone.

Designs that work on teacher appreciation shirts

The shirts staff wear again are the ones that feel like their school. A few ideas that work:

  • The mascot with a staff line. The school mascot and colors, with STAFF or a line like the school name and the year.
  • A building joke. Every school has one. The hallway everyone gets lost in, the copier with a name, the motto from the morning announcements. Keep it kind.
  • The school motto. If your school has one people actually say, it belongs on the shirt.

Avoid the generic slogan off a rack. Staff have plenty of those already. Our post on custom teacher shirts has more design ideas, and the free AI design studio spells your school's name right every time.

Tee, crewneck or hoodie

A classic tee starts at $24.99 and is the usual choice for a staff gift. It works on a spirit day and under a cardigan.

School buildings run cold, and staff often say the gift they wear most is a sweatshirt. A garment-dyed crewneck at $43.99 has a soft, worn-in look that teachers wear well beyond spirit days, and custom hoodies start from $31. A long sleeve tee at $29.99 sits in between. If the budget allows, a crewneck turns a one-week gift into something staff wear all winter.

Collecting sizes quietly

Teacher appreciation shirts are usually a surprise, which makes sizes tricky. Three ways schools handle it:

  1. Ask the office. The secretary often knows, or can quietly gather sizes on your behalf.
  2. Run a spirit wear survey early. In March, send a short form asking staff for their shirt size for future spirit wear. It is true, and it does not give the gift away.
  3. Tell them. Some schools announce the gift and ask for sizes openly. A shirt that fits beats a surprise that does not.

Every shirt is made to order, so each person gets their own size. Our post on the school size curve problem explains why guessing a spread of sizes goes wrong.

Budget for teacher appreciation week shirts

The math is simple. A staff of 40 in classic tees at $24.99 is $999.60 before shipping. The same staff in garment-dyed crewnecks at $43.99 is $1,759.60. On eligible garments, volume pricing applies automatically once you order enough of the same item, usually starting around 25 pieces, so a whole-staff order often lands there.

Many PTAs fund the gift from their general budget. Some sell the same design to families as spirit wear and use the difference to cover staff shirts. See spirit wear fundraiser margin math for how that works.

Timing for Teacher Appreciation Week

In the United States, Teacher Appreciation Week usually falls in the first full week of May. Work back from the day you want staff to wear the shirt:

  • Early April: finish the design and the staff list.
  • Mid-April: place the order. Shirts ship in about 5 to 9 business days.
  • The week before: bag and label each shirt with a name, ready to hand out on Monday morning.

Handing out teacher appreciation week shirts

The hand-out is part of the gift. Put each shirt in a bag with the person's name on it and a short note from families, and leave them in staff mailboxes first thing Monday. Pick one day that week, often Friday, and ask everyone to wear the shirt together. Take a group photo on the front steps. That photo ends up in the newsletter, on the school's social pages and on the staff room wall, and it is the moment most staff remember. Keep two or three names on a short list for anyone who was missed, and order their shirts the same day.

Staff spirit wear all year

Once the design is saved, it is useful all year. Staff can wear it on spirit Fridays, at home games and on field day. New staff who join in the fall get one shirt from the same design, and it matches. More on what school staff wear outside of uniforms is in school staff apparel, and full-school programs are on our custom school uniforms page.

Try one before you order for the building

Order one shirt in the final color and hand it to a teacher you trust for an honest opinion. Check the size of the design, the color against the school colors and how it looks in a photo. Then order for the whole staff.

Is there really no minimum?

None. One piece is a real order at normal pricing, with no small-order surcharge and no setup or digitizing fee. Every piece is made to order and ships in about 5 to 9 business days, and that window is the same for one piece or a few hundred. On eligible garments, volume pricing applies automatically once you order enough of the same item, usually starting around 25 pieces.
