This story is fiction. Every autumn, a village beneath Mystic Mountain gives the keep one lamb and asks no questions. The rule has lasted so long that nobody remembers who agreed to it. Then the keep chooses the one lamb a boy cannot bear to lose.

The tribute arrives like weather

Nobody rings a bell when the keep’s riders come. They do not need to. Doors close, voices lower, and every family counts its animals twice. The boy has raised his lamb from the spring thaw, feeding it by hand when it was too weak to stand. When the black ribbon is tied around its neck, his mother tells him the same thing every parent says. The keep takes one. We keep the rest.

He walks toward the place everyone avoids

By dusk the village road points in two directions. Carts, families, and shepherds move downhill toward the fields. The boy goes uphill alone. He carries his mother’s old brass lantern and keeps his coat wrapped tight against a wind that smells like stone and snow. At the last bend he passes weathered statues of saints whose faces have been worn blank, all of them turned toward the keep.

The gate is open because nobody expects him

The keep has no welcoming light. Its black gate stands partly open, and a raven watches from the ironwork without making a sound. Inside, soldiers glance at the boy and then at one another. None tries very hard to stop him. That frightens him more than a drawn sword would. When he asks where the lambs go, one guard points toward a stair cut into the mountain and refuses to follow.

The stairs lead below the oldest foundations

The boy descends past storage rooms, empty cells, and stonework that looks older than the castle above it. His lantern becomes the only warm thing in the dark. Iron rings line the walls, each larger than the last. Then he finds a broken chain thicker than his arm. The final stair ends at a vault so large his light cannot find the opposite wall.

Something in the dark notices the lantern

At first he thinks the shape ahead is another wall. Then the wall breathes. The air shifts around him, slow and deep, carrying the smell of cold earth. The boy raises the lantern higher. Metal links vanish upward into darkness. Somewhere beyond them comes the soft sound of a lamb sleeping. Then one enormous eye opens, catching the lantern flame like a second, darker sun.

Where this story comes from

This is an original fictional story from DreamToMerch’s Mystic Mountain series. The keep, village, boy, creature, road, and annual lamb tribute are invented for the series. They are not presented as folklore from a real town, a historical event, or an adaptation of a documented legend. Part 1 ends at the moment the boy finally sees what lives beneath the keep.
