Inside Neck Labels for a Small Clothing Brand: What to Print

An inside neck label is the small detail that makes a shirt feel like your brand's shirt. For a small brand, the simplest version is a print inside the neck with your logo and the size. Here is what to put on it, how it is made, and what the label has to say if you are selling in the US. Start your line: merch maker.

Printed labels vs woven tags

  • Printed inside label: printed directly inside the back of the neck. Soft, no itch, nothing to cut out. It suits made-to-order lines because it is part of the print job.
  • Woven or sewn-in tag: the classic look, but it requires sewing labels into each garment. That usually means bulk production runs and minimum orders on the labels themselves.

Most new brands start with printed labels and move to woven tags if they later produce in bulk.

Tear-away blanks

A printed label works best on blanks that have a tear-away manufacturer tag, so the original brand tag can be removed and yours takes its place. Some garments have one and some do not. Ask which garments in your line support a custom inside label before you lock in your blanks.

What to put on it

  • Your logo or brand name
  • Size
  • Fiber content, like 100% cotton
  • Country of origin, like Made in USA or Made in Honduras, matching where the blank was made
  • Care instructions, or a care symbol line
  • Optional: your website, or a short line for the owner

What US law expects on labels

For clothing sold in the United States, federal rules generally require the fiber content, the country of origin, and the identity of the manufacturer or seller (a company name or an RN number) on the garment, plus permanent care instructions. If the original tag stays on the garment, it usually already carries this. If you replace it, your label has to carry it. This is a general summary. Check the FTC's textile labeling guidance or ask an attorney before you sell at scale.

Design tips

  • Keep it small, about 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide.
  • Use one color that contrasts with the fabric but is not loud. Light grey on black, or charcoal on white.
  • Keep text at least about 6 points so the size and fiber line stays readable.
  • Use the same label layout across every product. It is part of the brand.

The owner-only line

Some brands add a short line inside the neck that only the wearer sees: a motto, a date, a thank-you. It costs nothing extra on a printed label and gives the shirt a story. It works well for limited drops, see limited-edition drop ideas.

Is there really no minimum?

None. One piece is a real order at normal pricing, with no small-order surcharge and no setup or digitizing fee. Every piece is made to order and ships in about 5 to 9 business days, and that window is the same for one piece or a few hundred. On eligible garments, volume pricing applies automatically once you order enough of the same item, usually starting around 25 pieces.
