Embroidered Names on Work Shirts: How to Order Per Person

A name on a work shirt does a real job. Customers use it. They remember the tech who fixed the furnace and ask for him next time. The standard setup is the company logo on the left chest and the person's first name on the right chest, stitched about a third of an inch to half an inch tall. Start here: embroidered work shirts with no minimum.

Placement and size

  • Right chest, opposite the logo: the most common spot. Line the name up with the logo height so the shirt looks balanced.
  • Letter height: 0.3 to 0.5 inches for a first name. Under a quarter inch is too small to stitch cleanly.
  • Width: keep it under about 3.5 inches. Long names can drop to a slightly smaller letter height to fit.
  • Under the logo: a name or job title under the left chest logo works if the logo is small and wide.
  • Back yoke or sleeve: good for crews where the name needs to be seen from behind, like installers and field techs.

Fonts that stitch well

Simple block letters and clean sans-serif fonts stitch the cleanest at this size. A plain script works for a softer look if the letters are at least 0.4 inches tall. Avoid thin serif fonts and anything decorative, because the fine parts fill in. Pick one font and use it for every name so the crew looks matched.

First name, full name or title?

First name is friendly and safe. Full name helps on shirts for licensed trades, inspectors and anyone who signs paperwork in front of a customer. A job title (Service Manager, Lead Tech) makes sense in bigger teams where customers need to know who decides things. Some teams skip names for safety reasons, especially staff who work alone in customers' homes. That is a reasonable call, and a logo-only shirt is still a strong uniform.

How ordering per person works

Each name is its own design, so in the builder you set the logo once and then make one version per person with their name added. It takes about a minute per name. Because there is no minimum, each person can get a different size, color or garment, and a new hire next month is just one more order with their name.

Before you start, gather a clean list: name exactly as it should be stitched, shirt size, and garment. Spell-check it twice. A misspelled name is the single most common problem with personalized uniforms, and it is always in the list that was sent.

Patches or direct embroidery?

Old-school name patches can be moved from shirt to shirt, but they look dated and the edges lift over time. Direct embroidery looks cleaner and lasts the life of the shirt. Since a replacement shirt with a name costs the same as any other single shirt, there is little reason to use patches anymore.

Which garments to personalize

Names matter most on the piece customers see: the polo or work shirt for client-facing staff, the tee for crews, and the jacket or quarter-zip in winter. The staff uniforms guide covers which piece goes with which role, and embroidered workwear for trades covers field crews. For the logo itself, see the left chest logo size guide.

Is there really no minimum?

None. One piece is a real order at normal pricing, with no small-order surcharge and no setup or digitizing fee. Every piece is made to order and ships in about 5 to 9 business days, and that window is the same for one piece or a few hundred. On eligible garments, volume pricing applies automatically once you order enough of the same item, usually starting around 25 pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Where should an employee name go on a work shirt?

Most often on the right chest, opposite the logo on the left chest, lined up at the same height.

How big should embroidered name letters be?

About 0.3 to 0.5 inches tall. Anything under a quarter inch is too small to stitch cleanly.

Can every employee get a different name and size?

Yes. Each name is its own item, and there is no minimum per name, size or color.

What font is best for name embroidery?

Simple block or clean sans-serif letters. A plain script works if the letters are at least 0.4 inches tall.

Should I use name patches or direct embroidery?

Direct embroidery looks cleaner and lasts the life of the shirt. Patches lift at the edges over time.

How do I add a new hire later?

Make one more version with their name and order it on its own. It ships in about 5 to 9 business days.
