Kepler-452b gives us just enough information to imagine a world and nowhere near enough to describe one. It could have oceans and continents. It could also be a hostile planet that only looks promising from 1,400 light-years away.

Even its gravity is still an educated guess
NASA says Kepler-452b's mass has never been directly measured. Scientists can model a rocky planet from its estimated radius, and some models produce surface gravity approaching twice Earth's. But that number depends heavily on composition. A lower-density world with a thick envelope of gas would produce a very different surface, assuming it even has a clearly defined solid surface.
The habitable zone does not promise comfortable weather
According to NASA's Exoplanet Exploration program, a habitable zone is mainly the distance where liquid surface water could be possible under suitable atmospheric conditions. It does not tell us that water actually exists. Kepler-452b could have a thin atmosphere, crushing pressure, global clouds, no atmosphere at all, or greenhouse conditions far beyond anything humans could survive.
Its older Sun-like star matters
NASA reports that Kepler-452 is about six billion years old and roughly 20 percent brighter than our Sun. The discovery team discussed the possibility that increased stellar energy could push a rocky planet toward greenhouse conditions over time. This is one reason scientists described the system as a possible glimpse at what an older version of the Earth-Sun relationship might resemble.
Six billion years is not evidence of civilization
NASA's Jon Jenkins noted that the planet has spent billions of years in its star's habitable zone, giving life considerable time to arise if the necessary ingredients exist. That is an opportunity, not evidence. Earth's history shows that complex life can take immense spans of time, and scientists currently have no information showing that biology ever began on Kepler-452b.
We have not heard anybody answering
The SETI Institute distinguishes between a potentially habitable planet and a detected technological civilization. No confirmed artificial signal has been attributed to Kepler-452b. Our present observations do not reveal cities, radio transmitters, animals, plants, or even an atmosphere. For now, the planet is known mainly through measurements of its star, which leaves the most interesting question completely open.
